Resident Evil infects US box office

Machete

Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth entry in the ongoing action movie series based on the popular video game, shouldered its way into the number one spot at the box office this weekend.

Perhaps benefitting from being the only new opener this week, the flick – released in 3D and re-pairing director Paul W.S. Anderson with his wife Milla Jovovich – drafted in $27m, shoving George Clooney’s The American into third place (with $5.8m).

Previous number one Takers yo-yoed from third to second with $6.1m, while Machete dropped two spots from second to fourth, wrestling $4.2m from audience pockets. Going The Distance proved as immovable as a stick in the mud in fifth with $3.8m.

Another yo-yoer came in the form of The Other Guys, which jumped up a spot into sixth place ($3.6m), while The Last Exorcism had a freefall from fourth to seventh ($3.4m).

Meanwhile, The Expendables rocked on in eighth place (£3.2m), Inception refused to budge in ninth ($3m) and Julia Roberts’ Eat Pray Love slipped from eighth to tenth with $2.9m.
